My name is Larry Phillips, and I’m the founder of Ancient Apex Fossils. I live in Charleston, South Carolina, where some of the world’s most incredible prehistoric shark teeth can still be found. What started as a passion for diving and exploring the ocean has grown into a mission to share authentic prehistoric fossils with collectors around the world.

Why Charleston?

Charleston’s waters are famous among fossil hunters for good reason.

Millions of years ago, much of coastal South Carolina was covered by warm, shallow seas that were home to an incredible variety of prehistoric marine life. As those oceans disappeared, they left behind one of the richest fossil deposits in North America.

Today, the rivers and offshore waters around Charleston and the southeast the oceans and rivers continue to reveal incredible treasures, including:

No two dives are ever the same.

Some days the visibility is only a few feet, forcing you to search the river bottom entirely by touch. Other days the current is strong enough to make every discovery feel earned.

Then there are the unforgettable moments—the instant your hand uncovers the unmistakable shape of a giant megalodon tooth resting beneath layers of sediment. It’s impossible to describe the excitement of realizing you’re the first person to hold that fossil in millions of years.

Those moments are what keep bringing me and fellow divers back underwater.

One of my favorite things about collecting fossils is that every specimen is unique.

Some have beautiful blue-gray enamel shaped by ancient minerals. Others display striking black, tan, or ivory coloration that developed over millions of years underground from
different mineral deposits.
Every chip, every feeding edge, and every color variation tells part of the fossil’s incredible journey through time.

No two megalodon teeth are exactly alike.
